Possible Engineering-based Solutions to the Sanitation issue in Manila Slums:
- A machine that can be accessed in public that you can throw your trash away in and then the machine disintegrates the waste
- For paper/plastic/cardboard items, they can be thrown away and used for composting, that way it could also help the environment
- A filtration system that can be accessed in homes that rids of trash. The filtration system can be technological and will tell you when its full, and gets rid of the trash itself
- A sewage pipeline that filters sewage
- Technological trash collectors that are built in the ground/roads that come out during certain times of the day to suck up any trash that has been left out
- Have like a “Wall-E” system. Have robots come and “eat” the garbage. They can be programmed to go to certain dump sites where they will form/drop their collected garbage onto a certain spot. Then bigger “Wall-E” can come and take that garbage and destroy it so that it does not just get piled up.
- Create personal incinerators? Basically, instead of having to wait for people to come and collect bulks of garbage, each family could have their own. Instead of waiting, they burn their garbage daily to prevent it from going onto streets and piling up. We could make them scented, so that the smell does not get too overbearing.
- Create artificial “insects” to be able to scan the garbage and eat whatever is not biodegradable. The way it works is that their “stomachs” could be another kind of incinerator, so they are always “hungry”. Whatever is biodegradable can be digested by another type of artificial insect that would help convert it into something helpful for the environment like fertilizer.
- Creating a “smart” trash can
- This can take the garbage thrown into it, as well as recycled items
- There would be separate trash cans for each type of item
- For example, plastic bottles would have one, and this machine would turn them back into usable goods that are also clean
- There would be one for non-recyclables
- There would be one for paper, etc.
- Also turn it into manure
- Once someone put the item into the desired can, the trash can would use its technology to then either dispose of the product or use it to remake another version of the original product
- Making drones that fly and swoop up litter, trash, and leftover bits and pieces of food dropped.
- They would act as trash keepers
- They would also be programmed to talk
- Creating sold and efficient waste management system.
